Do you TikTok? Up until a month ago, I didn’t. Even though as a marketer for various companies, I really needed to understand and dive into it because I knew TikTok was becoming one of the fast growing social platforms and a powerful channel for marketing. But, I just couldn’t. And, cue my teenage boys whose extreme aversion to TikTok – “What? TikTok? That’s for 11-year old girls!” and “Mom, if you go on TikTok, we’re going to have to block you everywhere” – kept my interest at bay. But then, I had a little more time on my hands in March. Thank you, COVID-19.
So, I joined TikTok. And I’m not even kidding, within 30 seconds, both my sons screamed from their rooms, “MOM!!!! Why did you join TikTok?” I mean, I know, as a tech marketer how they knew, but damn, that was fast. My 15-year old came running out to set boundaries – the most important being: if I ever post a TikTok, I never tag them or mention them by name.
Eyeroll. What was the big deal?
So, of course, like all social networks, TikTok has an algorithm that serves up content tailored to the user, so I didn’t see any of these 11-year olds my sons complained about. And within a few minutes, I was hooked. No wonder adults using TikTok has skyrocketed – with over 14.3 million Gen X and Baby Boomers joining in the last 18 months.
The #over40 and #over50 hashtags are filled with a perfect mix of seriously laugh-out-loud funny to informative to inspirational to vulnerable posts from GXB+ celebrities to regular guys and gals alike. So, while I’m not a TikTok power user at all and am still a bit afraid to post my first video for fear that my kids will move out (though haha! joke’s on them because we’re on quarantine!) – here are my favorite TikToks to date:

#2: LizaandMargaret50Plus for Sharing That We Miss Our Friends:
#3: FabnFitbyCarla for Being A Gorgeous Bad Ass:
#4: CSApunch for Being That Mom:
